Robert Kabushenga Reveals Why He Didn’t Practice Law

Former New Vision CEO Mr. Robert Kabushenga has explained why he didn’t practice law despite graduating as a lawyer and getting enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda.

Mr. Robert Kabushenga, until recently one of the highest-paid CEOs in Uganda, has often baffled many in the legal industry as to why he chose a career path in the media – starting from the bottom of New Vision as a newspaper vendor and rising to the highest position of CEO – when lawyering is hailed as a better career choice.

Appearing on NTV Uganda’s Mwasuze Mutya Show, Mr. Robert Kabushenga revealed that he never practiced law because he didn’t find it interesting and that the law is never fresh, unlike journalism.

“ I have never found practice very exciting. It is the same thing. It is not like the media. In the news media, each day is a new day. You can’t predict what will happen.” 

Mr. Robert Kabushenga told the Show’s host Faridah Nakazibwe, echoing the predictability and certainty of the law in the form of precedents.

Mr. Robert Kabushenga, who was narrating his inspiring life story, further disclosed that he got a “pass degree” something that sealed his ambitions of working as a lawyer because as an alternative to law practice, he had eyed teaching law at University which requires further education – which he could not get because of the “pass degree.”

Nonetheless, Mr. Robert Kabushenga acknowledged the contribution his going to law school had in his career because it was due to his legal education that he was able to be promoted from printing the New Vision newspapers to the legal officer in New Vision which paved his way into administration.
